Can be a good option for homes with historical or unique window frames.May not require interior or exterior trim replacement. Can be completed quickly and with less disruption to your home.Generally less expensive than a full-frame replacement. Here are some additional pros (and cons for consideration too). Insert window replacements are a popular option because it’s generally less expensive and less disruptive than full-frame replacements. This option typically provides better energy efficiency and improved aesthetics, but it can be more costly and require more work to install. Full-frame: Full-frame replacement involves removing the entire window, the frame included, and replacing it with a new one. This option is often less expensive and less disruptive to your home, but it may limit your customization options and could possibly result in air leaks. Insert: Insert window replacement involves replacing just the window sashes and leaving the existing frame intact. Here’s a quick overview of the two options you have when it comes to window replacements. Insert Vs Full Frame Window Replacements: The Basics I’ll be breaking down the benefits and costs of each option, so you can make an informed decision and feel confident in your choice. In this article, I’ll be diving headfirst into one of the bigger decisions you’ll face: insert vs. But with so many options out there, I get it, it can be tough to know where to start. Whether your windows are old and drafty, or you just want to give your home a fresh new look, there’s a perfect replacement window for you. If the time has come to replace your windows and your head is spinning from all the options available – don’t panic – I’ve got you covered.

They are often caused by a combination of loss of vegetation and heavy rains. These are rivers of loose soil and water on the surface of normally dry land. Flash floods are extremely dangerous and can move boulders, tear up trees, and destroy bridges and structures. Flash floods can also occur when a man-made dam or levy fails. This is typically caused by heavy rainfall from a thunderstorm or multiple thunderstorms. Flash Floodsįlash floods are rapid flooding of low-lying areas in a short period of time. Excess water can settle in and around your property causing immediate damage. Heavy rains can cause cresting rivers, backed-up storm drains, overflowing or broken dams and levees, and saturated ground. Heavy RainsĮxcessive amounts of rainfall can happen anytime during the year anywhere in the United States. If you have property in an area that is prone to hurricanes you should purchase flood insurance. Along with damaging properties along the coast, these storms bring torrential rains and high winds which can cause floods hundreds of miles inland. Tropical storms and hurricanes are powerful and can completely devastate entire communities when they hit. The following conditions can also cause flooding and may increase your risk of damage if they occur in your area: Tropical Storms and Hurricanes New land developments can increase flood risk, especially if the construction changes natural runoff paths. Snow melt, poor drainage systems, and saturated ground are common and often overlooked causes of flooding. Do I Need Flood Insurance?Įven if your home is not located in a high-hazard flood zone, you are still at risk. It is available for renters as well as homeowners, and it can help pay for the devastating effects of flood damage to your home's structure and contents. Standard homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flooding! Since flooding can occur anywhere it rains, every homeowner should seriously consider purchasing a flood policy.įlood coverage is available as a separate policy from the National Flood Insurance Program.
“Serious emotional disturbance” essentially reflects that not only are these kids having symptoms and mental health problems that we would consider severe enough to classify as a mental disorder - for example, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder - but also that those symptoms are really causing problems in their lives. McLAUGHLIN:For the study of children exposed to Hurricane Katrina, we used a fairly stringent definition of mental health problems. GAZETTE:Were those more general results reflected in the Katrina study? They’re not coming back down to baseline right away, or even a year or two years after the event. They develop symptoms that are staying elevated over time. The other 25 to 30 percent of kids are the ones that we are more concerned about. Typically, within about a year, they come back down to baseline. Across studies, you see that 20 to 25 percent develop symptoms of anxiety or depression or an increase in behavior problems that are relatively transient. The less-good news is that the remaining kids tend to experience some elevation in mental health problems. What we’ve learned across lots of different studies is that the most common pattern is resilience - at least half of children develop no meaningful mental health problem even after significant adversity. McLAUGHLIN:This work focused on community-level disruptions, like a natural disaster or severe life events - having a parent die, being exposed to significant violence, being in a life-threatening car accident - where the severity of the stressor is very meaningful. GAZETTE:When we’re talking about life stressors here, are we talking about the kinds that would happen in during any time, like death of a parent or a job loss of a parent, or something more unique and large-scale? That is very consistent with what we see following major life stressors of many kinds: on average about half of kids are going to weather those stressors without developing meaningful mental health problems or symptoms of mental disorders. They are not experiencing high levels of emotional distress they don’t meet criteria for a mental disorder. First, a piece of good news, which is that most children afterwards are doing fine. McLAUGHLIN:One of the things we observed in that study is quite consistent with other research on natural disasters, terrorist attacks, other types of community-level, stressful events that lead to widespread disruption. GAZETTE:You were the lead author of a study of serious emotional disturbance in youth after Hurricane Katrina. McLaughlin spoke about lessons learned from Katrina that could be applied to the current situation and what that might mean for the mental health needs of America’s children in the years to come. The Gazette spoke with McLaughlin, a psychologist who continues to study the impact of trauma - including the pandemic - on children. It found that cases of serious emotional disturbance - such as anxiety, depression, or inappropriate behavior significant enough to negatively affect a child’s school performance and everyday life - were nearly triple pre-storm levels more than two years after Katrina. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences, and senior author Ronald Kessler, Harvard Medical School’s McNeil Family Professor of Health Care Policy. One such study was conducted by Harvard researchers under lead author Katie McLaughlin, the John L. Though a tragedy, psychologists recognized the storm and its aftermath provided an opportunity to better understand the impact such calamities have on children. Hurricane Katrina caused widespread destruction and more than 1,800 deaths in 2005, much of it in New Orleans. This policy was not limited only to the Jim Crow south but extended to some northern states as well. The national office left the final decision on exactly how to handle black Scouting to the local councils. During this period, the BSA actively promoted a separate but equal policy (extending to leader training, Courts of Honor, summer camps, rallies, etc.) reflecting the social condition of the times. By the end of 1927, the number of black troops (with black scoutmaster and under a council jurisdiction) in the region had been increased to at least 32 localities in the South. It has been commonly reported by some historians that of the 108 black troops with black scoutmasters registered in the BSA in 1926, only five were located in the South (this author doubts the veracity of this statement and thinks it’s many more). It would be several more years before (white) Boy Scout councils in the South began to formally sanction black troops under their jurisdictions and incorporate these units into their organizational structures in some manner. These units applied directly to the National office in New York for their organizational credentials. This said nothing for the numerous black scout troops that did not come under the immediate jurisdiction of local councils during the formative years of the movement (1910-1920s). West eventually decided that each council would follow the local “custom” in how it dealt with the admission of black scout troops. West proposed a completely separate system of Scouting that attended to black scouts, including black leaders, facilities, and administrators (Rowan 2005: 49). West, admitted that the only acceptable way to deal with the presence of black Boy Scouts in the deep south (or otherwise in areas where Jim Crow was the order of the day), would be to handle the admission of black Boy Scouts (and troops) in a similar fashion to how the segregated South implemented its bifurcated educational system–separate and divided. In 1911, the Chief Scout Executive, James E. Scouting then (and for a number of decades thereafter) reflected the prevailing social attitudes of the communities that it served and flourished in. Since almost immediately after the founding of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), Scouting was not immune to racial division. After 500 cycles, the battery’s capacity will be reduced to ∼80% of its original capacity, meaning it will still work, but won’t hold as much charge.Make sure this fits by entering your model number.ġ.A couple of Recharging Methods: Enelong 1000w portable solar generator supports 3 recharging modes, can recharge with two compatible 100W solar panels(Not Included), AC wall outlet and car outlet, Supports pass-through charging so this camping battery power station can also be fully charged in 5 hours at the fastest.Ģ.Huge capacity: With a massive capacity of 1100Wh and 1000W inverter, our battery pack can meet your basic power needs and high-power devices such as Electric Grill, Coffee Maker, Frage, Microwave, Electric Stove and the like. Think about the chargers or appliances you plan on using on your travels and find out how much power they draw (in Watts). When it’s sunny, it’s great to work outside, and the Jackery Explorer lets you work outside continuously, without having to retreat inside when laptop batteries run low.Īlthough the Explorer 1000 is heavier than the Explorer 500 (10kg as opposed to 6kg), the larger inverter gives more flexibility when it comes to which appliances can be plugged in, and almost double the battery capacity means the unit will do the same job for twice as long. We also rate the Jackery Explorer and Solar Saga panel as a great remote-working setup, to provide extra flexibility for working from a laptop. It would also be useful as a backup powerbank for those with a low spec electrical system.Īs well as charging electronic devices, the Jackery Explorer 1000 could also power 230V appliances such as a SUP board pump, a speaker, an outdoor light, a blender or hair straighteners. Paired with two Solar Saga 100W solar panels, it makes a great little off-grid setup with zero installation requirements. If you’re planning a campervan conversion, this Jackery powerbank could be a really simple alternative to a campervan electrical system installation. That helps it consistently pick up larger debris such as cat litter or yard waste better than most robots, though it still doesn’t come close to deep-cleaning dust from a rug like a traditional vacuum does. It also has four times more raw suction than the already-strong Roomba i4 EVO, i7, and j7. Instead of the classic puck shape, the s9 has a D-shaped body and extra-wide brushes intended to improve its edge-cleaning and corner-cleaning abilities. Then there are the top-of-the-line Roomba s9 and self-emptying Roomba s9+, which we do not recommend. The big downside is that the RoboVac 11S and other bots like it don’t seem to be built to last for more than a couple of years on average, and we’ve heard about plenty of unrepairable breakdowns that happen even sooner. It’s shorter than most bots, which lets it glide under more furniture, picking up plenty of hidden debris. This basic, bump-and-run bot sounds more like a desk fan than a vacuum-even if you’re home while it works, you’ll barely notice it running. The Roomba 694 is the most current model with Wi-Fi (for on/off remote control through a smartphone app).Īlso consider the Eufy RoboVac 11S, which is so quiet and nimble that it blends into the background like no other robot (apart from the dozen or so clones from Eufy itself and other brands). They are also sturdier than any bump-and-run models from any other brand we’ve tested, which more than offsets the Roomba line’s slightly higher sticker price. The iRobot Roomba 694 is our first budget pick, but really, any model in the Roomba 600 series is a good choice, since they are all strong cleaners, especially on rugs, thanks to the dual-brush and dirt-detection systems. (We like to call them bump-and-run bots.) That’s fine for cleaning three or four rooms per session (or a little more if you’re patient), though the bumbling aimlessness gets on some people’s nerves and makes such models inconsistently effective at tidying larger areas. Eufy’s website has information about identifying and replacing the impacted batteries.Ĭheaper robots usually have semi-random navigation systems. Some models of the Eufy RoboVac 11S, purchased between April 1 and August 10, 2023, may contain a faulty lithium-ion battery pack that may overheat. IRobot also sells a few models that are very similar to the Roomba i4 EVO and are worth buying instead if you find them on sale, including the iRobot Roomba i3 EVO and Roomba i3+ EVO (with dock), which are identical to the i4 EVO and i4+ EVO but have smaller batteries, and the older Roomba 900 series. The downside is that it doesn’t work quite as fast as some competing models.Īnother neat option: The iRobot Roomba i4+ EVO adds a charging dock that automatically sucks the debris out of the robot and stores it in a disposable bag. You can remotely turn the robot on or off and optionally set an automatic cleaning schedule. It’s also better at cleaning rugs than most other bots, and hair doesn’t get tangled in its brushes as quickly. The Roomba i4 EVO is sturdy and repairable-you can reasonably expect to own it and use it regularly for years. It also has smart mapping, so you can tell it to clean or avoid specific rooms. The iRobot Roomba i4 EVO works well in most homes, large or small, because it drives in orderly, back-and-forth rows, keeping track of where it has or hasn’t been, so that it doesn’t miss any big patches of flooring. We took this information and developed many designs, which were narrowed down to several prototypes and then tested by our customers to determine which suited their needs best. We spent countless hours interviewing our customers, including doctors, nurses, point of care coordinators, respiratory therapists – a wide variety of healthcare providers – to find out their pain points and needs to gain insight into where we could improve diagnostics.įrom there, we observed providers using our current i-STAT System in operating rooms, emergency departments, intensive care units and other locations to understand how they use the device. Soman: Our first step was to understand exactly what clinicians needed in a with-patient testing device. What went into the R&D process? How long did it take to develop i-STAT Alinity? How do you prepare for diagnostic tests or innovations that don’t exist yet? How do you develop a device that won’t become outdated when new technologies arise? On top of that, we needed to be mindful not to lose sight of the features and capabilities people rely on with the current i-STAT device. To do that, we needed to anticipate the needs of tomorrow, which was a real challenge. What was one of the biggest challenges the R&D team faced while developing the next-generation product?īates: One of our main goals with i-STAT Alinity was to design a device that would withstand the test of time – that meant creating a device that was durable, reliable and could adapt to future needs. Our goal is to help healthcare providers diagnose, treat and send patients on their way in the quickest and most efficient way possible. Knowing how that feels, we want patients to be treated faster and more accurately, so they can return home and continue living their best and healthiest lives. At some point or another, a family member, a loved one or even we have been in the hospital. Narendra Soman: When our team thinks about our customers, we often imagine ourselves or our families. That’s how we began developing i-STAT Alinity. Our team knew there was more we could do to make often scary healthcare moments – from a potential heart attack to the need for dialysis – a little better. We also want to do all we can to help the healthcare providers who treat these patients. It’s about helping families and helping those who arrive at a hospital and need rapid treatment decisions. However, we knew we could do more to push the boundaries and develop an even better with-patient device that could make a difference in the healthcare industry.įor me and for many people on our R&D team, the inspiration for our work is the patient. Matt Bates: At Abbott, we’re very proud of our existing i-STAT device and the expertise we have in the point of care (testing that takes place with-patient) industry.
